Exit polls show anti-austerity Syriza wins Greek election

The anti-austerity party Syriza has won the greatest number of seats in the Greek election, according to figures from the country’s home office.

The party is at present predicted to claim 150 out of 300 seats, almost double the incumbent New Democracy party, which is heading towards 76.

A spokesman from the party said: “This result could be the first step for progressive developments throughout Europe.

“The government will implement its political programme addressing the humanitarian crisis and begin the real negotiation with our European partners.”

Exit polls taken earlier in the day showed Syriza was likely to win the election, though the exact extent of the victory remains in contention and will only become clear as all the results come in.

Whether at the head of a coalition or in majority government, the party is thought likely to challenge the austerity programmes implemented in the wake of the global financial crisis, a move that is being opposed in other parts of the eurozone, which shares a currency with Greece.
